We have 2 sons who are very different in social terms. The youngest often goes out with his friends and he likes school life due to social events. What goes with it is the social pressure that he has to behave in a way that society expects of him. The oldest is autistic and does not want to fit into society at all. He just wants to stand out. If the youngest would manage to stand out a bit more and to fit in a bit less , he would be invincible.

I like what Bruce Lee, the legend of Kung fu, said about the mind: "Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless like water. You put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water my friend." -If you are capable of training your mind to be shapeless like water, there will be no limits to what you can achieve.

Me and my family are blessed that we experience 4 seasons every year. Summer is coming to an end, the first leaves are falling from the trees. The colors in our garden constantly change during the year. If I need to clear my mind, I take a walk in nature, because nature always inspires.

3 times a week I pick up our son from football practice and on the way home we listen to Eminem's Lose Yourself. The chorus lyrics are poetry: "You better lose yourself in the music, the moment You own it, you better never let it go You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow This opportunity comes once in a lifetime" It reminds me of my mother who always said:" enjoy this moment, because this day will never come back." I am trying to lose myself in the moment every day.

Our children are at an age where you will have to deal with others who see you as a competitor. If you come from a safe family, it will take some getting used to as boys your own age trying to get you mentally broken to eliminate you as a competitor. I said it's a shame that it goes like this, but the positive thing is that you're good, otherwise they wouldn't see you as a competitor and the other positive thing is that if you don't give up, you will become mentally stronger. Look in the mirror, that's your competition!

Kindness makes our day. We will never forget the kind man who guided us to a parking service in the middle of nowhere when we had to catch a plane on Amsterdam airport. And we will forever be grateful for miss R. , the kind teaching assistent in our autistic son's first school. In most cases, autistic children and their parents lack the kindness of society, so if you meet someone who is just friendly without prejudice, it will make your day. Always be kind, because kindness changes everything.

Small children often have a lot of imagination. They play roles that they come up with themselves. We were blessed that our children only differ in age by 1.5 years. They had both given themselves a nickname and together created the best adventures. They were best friends for years and they could fill an entire cartoon series with their adventures. The good thing is most children have so much imagination. The bad thing is that society does so little with it. According to Albert Einstein the TRUE sign of intelligence is not knowledge but.... Imagination

"Why does a school day last so long and a vacation day so short?" our son asked. "Because on a vacation day you can do everything that you are passionate about. And when you do things that you love, time flies," I answered. "Why don't schools let us do what we love?" "Good question, unfortunately we cannot change the school program, but you can make sure you will do whatever sets your soul on fire in your leisure time."

Our autistic son often asks if I love him. I always answer that I love him very much and that he is great and that I enjoy his company. One day I asked why he so often asks although I tell him every day without him asking. He said that he feels invincible when I say I love him and that he likes to hear it before he has to do something difficult. Then he knows he can do it. Well...the soul that is loved, will allways flourish.

This week I had a conversation with my son. He explained to me that one moment he knows exactly what he wants in life and the other moment he has no idea. That sometimes he has no doubts at all and sometimes he constantly worries. I said he perfectly described Puberty. And that everyone his age has uncertainties. The trick is not to show that you have fears and doubts, so nobody can use it against you. Embrace your fears and you will be free forever.

When he was 7 he had 3 girls who wanted to be his girlfriend.... When he went to a special needs school when he was 10, the teacher said he would get a lot of attention from children, because he looked so good.... Some time ago someone asked me how he was doing and if he was still so beautiful.... Our autistic son never cared about his looks, but he is beautiful inside and out. Be happy, be bright, be you!

If I could turn back time..... Our autistic son loves to talk about the past. Much of his time has been lost due to fear. Fear of school and of social contacts with other children. Now that he is 17 years old and completely free of fear, he wants to make up for his lost time. View photos, retrieve stories, he can't get enough of it. Fear blocked him from enjoying life. He can see now, that there were a lot of things to enjoy...... When the mind is calm, everything becomes clear.

Every day our autistic son promises that he will try to go to bed earlier. So far this has not been successful. Bad habits are hard to change. I have decided not to focus on him, but on myself. That's why I am starting with muscle strength training today. I am confident that one day he will succeed, because every day is another chance to change your life.

Our autistic son asked me: "why are people so difficult ?" He wanted to participate in a gaming server and was busy for one week to get an answer. I answered that people aren't difficult all the time. They can be difficult and easy, indifferent and enthousiastic, noisy and silent and so on. He said: "Just like the wind when I am running. It feels like silk on my face during summer, which I love, and like sand on my face on cold days." "That's right," I said, "let's have something to drink in the silky wind of summer."

My husband was a judoteacher and taught a group of children, that was passionate about judo. He presented the children and their parents the idea that he would go to Japan, the country of judo origin, with the children if they would continue to train like they did. They started to monthly put money aside and the children participated in the yearly big club action, where they sold judo items. When the children were about 17 years old, they went to visit Japan, they went to Tokyo Disney and they trained with a Japanese judoclub. He had given the children a dream and made it come true.

Our children always watched a cartoon series in which the people could control the elements water, earth, fire or air. Our autistic son always called it the power and he wanted the power over fire. He asked me which one was my power. I answered that my power is mental strength, which is all the powers combined.

Life's purpose is all about collecting special moments. Spending time together, playing cards, watching a movie, visiting a city, having a picknick, celebrating together, watching a sportmatch and talking, listening and laughing a lot. I am thankful for the many special moments I had and the many that will come.

I always wanted to succeed in the things I started. Thanks to my parents I could go study. After that I could get a job and build a business of my own. But for a long time I doubted if I could succeed in raising our autistic son. He was not capable to fit in society. And I couldn't imagine a life outside of society. Our son taught me that it is possible. I still believe in succeeding only.
