Photo by @bethjwald | One of the country’s oldest and most iconic National Parks, Yosemite draws thousands of climbers every year who test themselves, and their skills, on the massive granite walls. In this photo, a climber cuts loose and swings out over Yosemite Valley during a climb of The Shield, a classic route on the 3000+ foot face of El Capitan. I made my own pilgrimages to Yosemite National Park as a young climber and my experiences there connecting to the natural world helped form who I am and I am forever grateful that activists like John Muir worked hard to preserve this incredible place. National Parks make available to all the natural wonders and heritage of our beautiful country and are an intrinsic part of the America idea. For more photos of our ancient and modern relationship with nature and of National Parks around the world, follow me at @bethjwald. #thebestidea #nationalparklove #yosemitevertical #yosemitenationalpark

Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | Barchan dunes start their journey from shoreline to desert near Paracas, Peru. This would be an easy picture with a drone, but not so twenty years ago, as I spiraled over the waves with one hand on my paraglider and leaned out with my camera. Barchans are caused by very strong winds. They are beautiful to photograph, but make for sketchy take-off and landings. To view more of our world from above, follow @geosteinmetz.

Photo by @Chrisburkard | It always amazes how much modern society reflects nature even though we often fail to realize it. It’s easy to understand why Zion National Park’s slot canyon system is called “The Subway”. Full of twisted tunnels that are all interconnected it can be navigated to take you across vast distances in an efficient manner. Today, this is the same system exists in almost every major city in the world. The only difference is that in this case, nature beat us by about 150 million years. It's a reminder we still have a lot to learn from the planet and its natural processes.

Photo by Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto | The magnificent Matsumoto castle looks good in most any light, but is most dramatic at dawn. It is known as the Crow Castle due to its black exterior. In contrast, white swans live in its moat. And thank you to the 3 who swam into my frame. #matsumoto #matsumotocastle

Photo by @daisygilardini | Hunting among the icebergs. Polar bears are at the top of the Arctic food chain, and are the only truly carnivorous bears. Seals make up 90 percent of their diet. They fear no other species — except humans. Polar bear lives are broken into two seasons. The first is winter, the feasting season, when bears hunt seals while roaming on the pack ice. And then there is summer, the fasting season, when the absence of ice pushes the bears onto land, with scarce food sources. Photo by @hellokrisdavidson | Reaching the top of the Kelso Dune Field in the Mojave Desert in California involves a Sisyphean effort of scrambling upward and sliding backward against the traction resistant incline, but it’s all worth it. Upon reaching the top just as the sun is setting is akin to stepping into a dreamscape. In all my years of travel journalism, it remains a favorite memory. As the largest field of aeolian sand deposits in the Mojave Desert, the area spans 45 miles, comprised of migrating dunes, vegetation stabilized dunes, sand sheets and sand ramps— and a good dose of magic. #Mojave #NPS #kelso
