I felt really overwhelmed and fortunate speaking with someone we helped recently - Bonnie. Her story touched my ❤️ and it's a really important one to share.
She was 8 months pregnant with twins when her social worker asked for our help. Rather than feeling excitement about the twins birth, all she felt was sad & anxious for a number of reasons. Her relationship was unstable, she had nowhere permanent to live & she didn’t have her family around her. She found it impossible to think about life with her new babies when she didn’t even know where they’d sleep.
I can't even imagine what that must have felt like.
Bonnie also couldn't afford a single piece of clothing for her twins, or any of the basics like nappies. But most importantly, the twins didn’t have a safe place to sleep.
Her pregnancy is only half of Bonnie’s story. Her life had already been full of challenges. Bonnie is disabled after a serious horse riding accident when she was 12 that has left her with incomplete paraplegia. So she was terrified about not only how she would afford everything her twins needed, but how she would physically care for them.
The day we stepped in to help Bonnie was the day she started looking forward to becoming a mum. Because of the community's support, we provided all the essentials including a pram with a hand brake that Bonnie could easily use.
We have 355 families on our waiting list, just like Bonnie's at the moment. I still find it hard to believe that 1 in 6 children live below the poverty line in Victoria. Families in crisis are turning to us more than ever before and last year it cost us just $126 per baby or child to give them every item they needed for a safe start to life.
