HANGING OUT AT CITY HALL: Visual arts major Chloe Linscomb placed three pieces in the People's Gallery art exhibit that opened at City Hall Friday night. She was the youngest artist selected to exhibit, and her pieces were selected by the Cultural Arts Division in competition with approximately 1,250 submissions by 350 local artists. #MACvisualarts #atx #austintx #austintexas #austincityhall #Repost @macfinearts with @repostsaveapp ・・・ Last night senior Visual Arts Major Chloe Linscomb attended the People’s Gallery art opening at city hall where she had 3 pieces showing. Each year, the Cultural Arts Division issues a call for artworks to Austin artists. This year, approximately 1,250 entries were submitted by more than 350 local artists. Last night Chloe was the youngest artist in the show, drawing a crowd to her pieces. “I’m glad I was able to participate in this show. Talking to people about my art and how it made them feel something makes me happy that my emotions translated over to my piece!” Missed the show? Chloe’s pieces will be up at city hall until 2020. GLASER FOCUS: During her second period ceramics class on Friday, junior potter Shaine Rozman submerges a bowl in glaze as part of her semester-long effort in Ceramics 3 to make ceramic tableware. The class allows experienced ceramics artists like Rozman latitude to explore their creativity and makes pieces of their own choosing. Rozman said this bowl won't be ready for a Thanksgiving table because the glaze has to harden overnight before it can be fired, after which time it has to sit for another few days before its table ready. @ceramfamgram #MACvisualarts #macfinearts @macfinearts

WE HAVE AN OPENING, VOLUME 1: Thursday evening in the MAC Gallery, visual arts students and faculty celebrated the opening of the fall art show featuring the first pieces created by the Mac visual artists in 2018-2019. The artwork will be on display through Dec. 20. On Dec. 6, the visual art programs will be having their 5x7 gallery and fundraiser. (1) Senior Emily Horan and junior Bella Rothenflue look at their peers’ artwork. (2) Painting students created works of art out of paints that would glow when placed by a black light. (3) Created by sophomores, juniors and seniors, these pieces of art glowed under the black lights Thursday night. (4) In his Drawing I class, sophomore Drake Snider created his piece “Brothers Groove.” This was for the students' color splash project where they had to incorporate a splash of color into a monotonal drawing. (5) In her printmaking class this year, junior Ella Cheesar created “Bubble Boy” using a block-print. Reporting and photos by Anna McClellan. #MACvisualarts #MACfinearts

SPEAKING UP: Class of 2018 graduate Avery Johnson was at Carnegie Hall in New York City yesterday to receive her Scholastic Gold Key National Medal for her ceramics piece, "Speak." She described how the piece came to be in a recent Shield interview. “Last year I took American Sign Language at ACC, and instantly I fell in love with the language and the culture behind it. I wanted to focus on the things that seeing and hearing people think that the blind and the deaf can’t do. I wanted to showcase that, ‘Yes, they can do that.’” The piece is part of a series of ceramic works that touch on the theme of communication. “I’m really fascinated with how language is developed and how we can talk and speak to one another," Johnson told the Shield. In the fall, Johnson plans on majoring in advertising at UT Austin. To read our profile of Johnson, please click the link in our bio. Photos courtesy of Carey West. MIX IT UP: Learning about paint and color, Mr. Cauthern’s Art 1 class mixed different paint colors today in order to experiment with hue and value. They will put these skills to use in a project later this year. “Art 1 is so much fun,” freshman Cosette Hendrickse said. “It’s really cool because you get to try a lot of things and learn a bunch of different skills.” Photo by Ellen Fox. #dayinthelifeatmac #macvisualarts #macfinearts
