In 2014 I was commissioned by @benetton to produce some pictures for their #unhate campaign,
in which we could celebrate the (wishful thinking) news that hasn’t happened yet: the news we’d like to see.
These three photos are all about ‘child divorce’ as opposed to #childmarriage
Unfortunately I didn’t get to travel too far in pursuit of these images: all three were shot in the same old church in Peckham, south east London.
Great set build (sorrrrry I cant remember who dunnit: make yourself known and I’ll credit)
These peoples didn’t know each other before the shoot.
From memory a couple didn’t speak English and I’m not sure how much was explained before the shoot.
I grew up reading #colours so i was thrilled to shoot for #Benetton
Love to do photos that might trigger a little thought and/or maybe affect some positive change, however small.
A lot of what I’ve done photographically is fluff.
One Christmas I met a guy at a party from Bosnia.
I said excitedly ‘oh wow! I’ve just come back from Bosnia!’
‘What did you do there?’ He asked
Then in a moment of realization I was embarrassed to say I’d been out there with ‘hootie and the blowfish’ who were playing to the United States marines (it was just post conflict)
He said he’d left Bosnia dressed as a woman to avoid being captured and killed like his brothers had been.
I felt so shit stupid for my shallow reason for being there.
But he said it was important for people in war zones to see fashion and hear pop music, see art: important to know there’s more to life than horror.
this cunning campaign was conceived by @damianisaak
