Do you know what your addictions are? Besides Instagram of course... 😉
I say "addictions" plural, because most of us have many different addictions without even realizing it. Not only can we be addicted to things like food, sex, drugs, alcohol, coffee, work, working out/exercising, technology, etc., but we can also be addicted to certain ways of being, such as the planner, the control freak, the rageaholic, the victim mentality, etc.
Addictions are things that not only distract us from being with ourselves, but are things which we have performed/engaged in so many times, and for such a long time, that they have taken on a life of their own, and become automatic parts of ourselves--reinforced neurochemically by our brain and bodies--to the point where they control and drive us, rather than us controlling them.
For every emotional experience we have, our brain produces neurochemicals (neuropeptides/neurohormones) which match that emotional response. So, just like someone can become physically addicted to cocaine or heroin, we can also become addicted to certain emotions and certain ways of being.
Addictions are not necessarily "good" or "bad" they simply are what they are...and each culture/society has different judgments about which ones are more acceptable than others...which ones do you think are the most “acceptable” in the United States?
